Paul Robeson Cultural Center holds event, offers support in light of xenophobia

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Each Friday the Paul Robeson Cultural Center (PRCC) holds a virtual event titled "Free Your Mind Friday" centered around different topics related to racism. On April 17, the event will be a conversation with Phil Yu about recent acts of discrimination and xenophobia against individuals of Asian descent. The event will take place at 4 p.m. on the PRCC Instagram account, @psuprcc.

Yu is the founder and editor of the popular Asian American news/culture blog "Angry Asian Man." He also is co-host of the web talk show "Angry Asian America" on ISAtv and host of "Sound and Fury: The Angry Asian Podcast." Building a steady, loyal readership since 2001, "Angry Asian Man" has been called “a daily must-read for the media-savvy, socially conscious, pop-cultured Asian American.” Mixing humor with criticism, Yu's commentary has been featured and quoted in The Washington Post, The New York Times, National Public Radio, CNN, The Wall Street Journal and more.

The PRCC also has publicly expressed support for students of Asian descent in a recent letter from the PRCC staff. The staff expressed support for the Asian American and Chinese international communities around acts of racism, bigotry and xenophobia being experienced as a result of the coronavirus.

“We are united with you and stand in solidarity with all people who identify as Asian, in addition to their families, friends and loved ones who have been impacted,” the letter states.

The PRCC also encouraged students who have experienced an act of bigotry, discrimination or harassment to reach out to PRCC staff members or to make a report at http://equity.psu.edu/reportbias.
