As part of our regular “We Are!” feature, we recognize 16 Penn Staters who have gone above and beyond what’s asked of them in their work at the University.
This week, on behalf of the entire Penn State community, we’d like to say thank you to:
- Maria Arias, custodial operations at Penn State Harrisburg, whose nominator wrote: “Maria is an amazing colleague who works very hard to keep our building clean, stocked, comfortable and visually appealing. She deserves a shoutout for all her efforts.”
- Jillian Balay, communication and stewardship coordinator for the Career Enrichment Network in the College of the Liberal Arts, whose nominator wrote: “Jillian's hard work and creativity drive career readiness awareness, empowering students to excel in internships and beyond. From strategic communications to enrichment funding, Jillian’s strengths and ingenuity are indispensable— our success wouldn’t be possible without her!”
- Jenna Craig, assistant teaching professor in Eberly College of Science, whose nominator wrote: “Jenna has been an advocate for teaching faculty in the Department of Biology by vocalizing challenges with the aim to lift others up. She is equity-minded in her teaching of large enrollment biology courses, and she promotes integrity to organize teaching faculty to better serve our community.”
- Chad Illig, construction services representative in the Office of the Physical Plant, whose nominator wrote: “Chad is always one of the first to step up when any issue arises. Chad really took charge as the end of football season neared to ensure that the Beaver Stadium press box demolition could happen on schedule. He went well above from a responsibility and time-spent perspective to see it through.”
- Rebekka Kuhn, academic adviser in the Division of Undergraduate Studies, whose nominator wrote: “Rebekka is a strong advocate for all students. The first person to ask questions about how we do things and why, Rebekka pushes DUS and Penn State forward to be more inclusive, equitable and accessible. Thanks, Rebekka, for encouraging us to meet the high standards our students deserve.”
- Michelle Kurtyka, assistant director of academic affairs and assistant teaching professor of kinesiology at Penn State Beaver, whose nominator wrote: “Michelle's extra effort after the retirement of the administrative assistant in academic affairs has been top notch! She goes out of her way to learn new processes and is always willing to take on new tasks. She has a positive attitude, and it has been a pleasure to work with her in this new role.”
- Jen Latchford, senior coordinator, pre-award in the College of Engineering Office of Engineering Research Administration, whose nominator wrote: “Jen is a key component of Penn State research, working with faculty to submit research grants. She juggles many proposals from professors, many of whom often submit their materials at the last minute, but she is always ready, knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you, Jen! We couldn't do it without you!”
- Danielle Liddic, career coach in the Career Enrichment Network, College of the Liberal Arts, whose nominator wrote: “Danielle is an outstanding career coach, helping students achieve their goals and express their interests with confidence. Her outreach and coaching with students in the labor and human resources program and strong partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment Relations is invaluable!”
- Betsy Lohr, education program coordinator in the College of Agricultural Sciences, whose nominator wrote: “A huge shoutout to Betsy for her unwavering dedication and incredible contributions to our team! From prepping early to helping on weekends, she’s always going above and beyond. Betsy is an amazing team player and a joy to work with. Thank you, Betsy, for everything you do. You’re truly appreciated!”
- Toni Mann, electronic prepress operator for Multimedia and Print Services, whose nominator wrote: “We submitted a printing job and provided some specific directions and requests. Toni looked at what we wanted and got back to us with a suggestion for an adjustment on her end that would make the piece even better. The attention to detail and help was greatly appreciated!”
- Jess McCormick, senior admissions counselor at University Park, whose nominator wrote: “Jess is a talented admissions counselor with tons of specialized knowledge in a variety of areas, but she also has a tremendous heart. Whether it's working with students or fellow staff, she delivers each message with care — even when the news is tough. She is a true gem, and we value her immensely!”
- Douglas McGowan, an undergraduate student in the College of Engineering, whose nominator wrote: “Douglas sets the example for mechanical engineers looking for their field of interest post-graduation. Tacee exudes the true ‘We Are!’ spirit and attitude!”
- Rachel White, library operations supervisor in University Libraries, whose nominator wrote: "Rachel is an amazing supervisor, providing support to many people at University Park and across the commonwealth. She is a compassionate supervisor and is often the person people seek. She knows the answer or where to find it. She respects others, recognizing that everyone is on their own journey. She strives for excellence.”
- Brad Zdenek, director of economic development and student programs in the Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization, whose nominator wrote: “Brad’s kindness and generosity shine in everything he does. He’s always willing to lend his time and support, making everyone feel valued.
