Hershey Children's Hospital seeking volunteers

The opening of the new Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital brings a need for approximately 100 new volunteer positions -- in a wide variety of areas.

Volunteers are an integral part of the operation of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. There are 400 active volunteers who serve on a regular basis in the Medical Center, including 125 who work exclusively in Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.

The opening of the new Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital brings a need for approximately 100 new volunteer positions. These volunteer positions are in a wide variety of areas, including the Ronald McDonald Family Waiting Room and the new Ronald McDonald Family Waiting Room cart, the family resource center, the sibling play area, child life and the information desk. Morning, afternoon and evening shifts are available along with weekday and weekend shifts. The time commitment for each position and shift varies, but on average the commitment is about four hours per week.

“Our volunteers fill important roles within the organization,” says Sue Espenshade, manager, volunteer services. The variety of opportunities and schedules that we can offer allow us to accommodate a wide range of personal schedules.”

Prior to beginning the volunteer program, individuals are required to attend an orientation session, and complete a series of health clearances and background checks.
