UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Health Promotion and Wellness is offering free wellness services designed to help students set goals, develop skills and enhance their healthy behaviors in the following areas: financial wellness, healthy relationships and sexual health, nutrition and healthy eating, physical activity, sleep and relaxation, and time management.
Below is an overview of the services available.
Financial Wellness — to help increase knowledge about budgeting fundamentals, credit card and debt management, student loan borrowing and repayment; and to help students develop skills to manage their finances, handle debt, and set long and short-term financial goals.
Healthy Relationships and Sexual Health — to help increase students’ understanding of healthy relationships and sexual-health behaviors; develop skills to form lasting healthy relationships with others. Students learn about healthy communication skills, safe sex strategies and sexual-health resources on campus.
Nutrition — to help increase knowledge and understanding of basic nutrition concepts and promote healthy eating. Students learn about the healthy plate model and the importance of eating breakfast. Students learn how to have a healthy diet while living on a student budget.
Sleep — to help increase students’ quality and quantity of sleep and reduce sleep difficulties. Students are introduced to a 3-week "sleep camp" which is designed to help them experience the benefits of regular sleep. Students learn how to modify their bedroom to improve sleep quality and quantity.
Physical Activity — increase students’ activity levels and introduce skills that help the student develop a physically active lifestyle across the lifespan. Students learn the national guidelines for physical activity and how to implement the 5 components of fitness.
Stress — decrease the overall stress levels of students through the introduction of evidence-based stress management techniques. Students can choose to work on developing time management and/or relaxation skills. In the time management sessions, students learn how to prepare for big exams and reduce procrastination and multi-tasking.
Each service includes three 1-hour sessions with a trained peer educator in the newly renovated Wellness Suite located in 20 Intramural Building.
The services will help students succeed academically and socially, said Linda LaSalle, director of Health Promotion and Wellness.
“In each service, students will learn valuable information and new skills that will help them make lasting health behavior changes,” LaSalle said.
