UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The fourth annual Freedom 5K for PTSD run will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, as part of Penn State’s Military Appreciation Week.
The Freedom 5K for PTSD — organized by the Penn State Aerospace Studies Student Organization — will start at 11 a.m. at the Westgate Building on the University Park campus. The event raises money and awareness for post-traumatic stress disorder and honors the memory of Penn State alumnus and Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2005.
Race registration and donations are currently being accepted at the Freedom 5K for PTSD website. The registration deadline to participate in the race is Nov. 6.
The Lone Survivor Foundation serves as the race’s benefactor and offers support for wounded service members, their spouses, children and care partners by providing techniques and tools that address post-traumatic stress, mild traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, military sexual trauma and care partner stress.
The race is part of Penn State’s annual Military Appreciation Week, which celebrates America’s Greatest Generation. The festivities kick off on Nov. 8 and culminate with the annual Military Appreciation Football Game at Beaver Stadium on Nov. 16.
More than 5,600 Penn State students use the GI Bill as either an active-duty service member, a reservist, veteran or military dependent, across all of the University’s campuses, including Penn State World Campus. Penn State has consistently been recognized as a military-friendly school for the many academic programs and support resources available to service members.
