MONACA, Pa. — Penn State Beaver Assistant Professor of Computer Science Madhurima Ray has been elevated to senior member status in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The IEEE is a professional association for electronics engineering, electrical engineering and additional related disciplines. To gain senior status, the member must have 10 years of professional experience and have made significant contributions to their field for at least five of those 10 years, Ray said.

Ray, who has a doctorate in computer and information science from Temple University, worked at Intel and Dell EMC as a senior software engineer before teaching at Penn State Beaver. Her research focuses include data center storage and network optimization, storage systems and emerging storage technologies.

Ray said her work involves enterprise-grade data centers used by corporations like Amazon. She said she looks at specifics for a network to improve that network and network attached storage capabilities. Additionally, she also looked into the kinds of applications an organization is running to determine how to provide optimal performance to those applications while executing on the datacenter infrastructure.

At Beaver campus, Ray’s teaching focuses on fundamental system topics such as operating systems, computer organization and database management systems.

“With Dr. Ray’s past experience in the field working for Intel and Dell and her current engagement in the field as illustrated by this membership status, our computer science program is well positioned to offer students strong industry related experiences so that upon graduation they are competitive in the job market,” Penn State Beaver Chancellor Carey McDougall said.
