UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two WPSU Penn State productions have been honored with prestigious Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards. The regional Emmys were presented Saturday, Sept. 24 in Philadelphia during the 34th annual awards ceremony of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Mid-Atlantic chapter.

WPSU productions "You Can’t Say That," with executive producer Jeff Hughes and producer Lindsey Whissel Fenton, won an Emmy in the education/schools – program/special category, and "Holding History: The Collections of Charles L. Blockson," with producer/director/writer Cheraine Stanford and writer Cole Cullen, captured its Emmy in the human interest program/special category.

"This project is very near and dear to my heart, so it is particularly exciting and humbling to receive an Emmy for it,” said Stanford. “I am most grateful to Mr. Blockson for trusting me and sharing his story, and to the talented team who made this production happen."

“Holding History: The Collections of Charles L. Blockson” told the story of historian and bibliophile Charles Blockson’s lifelong journey to unearth and preserve the history, culture and contributions of people of African descent. The production also appeared in the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia in August.

“You Can’t Say That” documented Penn State’s popular race and ethnic relations course in which Sam Richards and Laurie Mulvey paired provocative lectures and facilitated student discussions to promote cross-cultural understanding.

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter, which represents Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio, presented 86 Emmys in 78 categories for excellence in television programming and individual achievement. WPSU Penn State, which earned seven nominations this year, has captured 21 Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards since the chapter’s formation in 1981.
