UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Centre Stage will produce Michael Friedman and Alex Timbers’ "Love’s Labour’s Lost the Musical" — play by William Shakespeare, directed by Christine O’Grady, music directed by Ben Kiley — April 1-12, at the Pavilion Theatre on the University Park campus.
"Love’s Labour’s Lost the Musical" is an adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy — filled with romance, revelry and enchanting music — bringing together the language of the bard with a fresh contemporary pop-rock score.
The King and his best buds decide at their five-year college reunion to swear off the joys of women. But when four cute, clever ladies from their pasts show up, they’re forced to reconsider their pact. Smart, sexy, outrageous and irreverent, “Love's Labour's Lost” is a madcap celebration of true love and coming of age.
Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies Program Dramaturg Caden Barley wrote, "Remember the hours spent in class, listening to a teacher with 30 years of professional experience try to explain a new mathematical theory in words you’ve never even heard before; think of that one peer who believed that using the longest synonym in a thesaurus automatically won a debate. Now, as these memories come rushing back, does your frustration at this unnecessary, phony, high-brow use of academic language return as well? If you said “yes”: good! Because Shakespeare himself felt similar frustration, sparking him to pen the original version [of 'Love's Labour's Lost]."
Evening performances at 7:30 p.m. are $28; preview performance at 7:30 p.m. is $23; and tickets for students are $15. For additional show information, visit the Penn State Centre Stage website. Non-Penn State Arts and Architecture students can see it for free by visiting the Arts Ticket Centre during the week of the production.
