UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The HUB-Robeson Galleries presents "moments," an online thesis exhibition of photography by Zsuzsanna Nagy, a second-year master of fine arts student in photography. Nagy is a Hungarian-born American artist and the recipient of the Graduate School’s 2019-20 Professional Master’s Excellence Award.

“I aspire to transform reality and create worlds with my work. In a process of simplification and abstraction, I reconfigure my surroundings. Impressionistic, atmospheric, and sometimes surreal, the images afford a dreamlike view of ordinary things. They oscillate between abstraction and figuration,” Nagy said in her artist statement.

Nagy explained that she deliberately neglects precision and detail in order to invoke ambiguity or mystery. Her images are evocations more than representations. A peripatetic artist, her work emerges from practices of walking in her urban environment. She works largely from intuition rather than intellect. The photographs convey a momentary response to the world.

To view this exhibition, visit The HUB-Robeson Galleries current exhibits website. The exhibition was originally planned as a slideshow to be viewed in a dark and intimate space within a gallery. To experience this feeling virtually, Nagy hopes viewers will sit back in a dark and quiet room to immerse themselves in the flow of images.

Nagy’s images have been exhibited recently at the House of Lucie in California, and the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Maryland. She received second place at the 2019 Penn State Annual Graduate Research Exhibition’s Visual Arts Option, and has participated in solo and group exhibitions, including the Keller Collective Art Gallery in Pennsylvania, the Overture Center in Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Union.

Nagy expressed gratitude to her mentor, Professor Lonnie Graham; the other members of her graduate committee, professors Steven Rubin and Rudy Shepherd; and all her educators and peers at SoVA for their support during her studies. Nagy said she also is thankful for the expertise of the HUB-Robeson Galleries, which supported her in moving and presenting the show online during the pandemic.

The HUB-Robeson Galleries, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, welcomes classroom partnerships and offers virtual tours through screen sharing. Please contact the galleries for more information.
