UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Rachel Eng's mixed-media artwork will be showcased in the Woskob Family Gallery through Nov. 10, in an exhibit titled "even out."

The Woskob Family Gallery is located at 146 S. Allen Street, in downtown State College.

Eng also will conduct an artist talk on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in room 102 of the Visual Arts Building. Following the talk, there will be an opening reception in Woksob Family Gallery to celebrate the site-specific installation. The reception is free and open to the public from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

About "even out"

Taking inspiration from the densely wooded forest in which she played as a child, Eng moves across media to create fields of color and form that suggest strange new landscapes. In works on paper, ceramic sculpture, and mixed-media installation, the artist explores how accumulations of smaller forms join together to become monumental. The works in "even out" combine "natural" materials, such as paper and clay, with synthetic ones like plastic and astro-turf. Groupings of ceramic forms might be magnified cilia, the cells of an unknown creature, or the surface of the ocean floor. Plastic bags woven together appear, from afar, like fabric or fur. Through these surprising juxtapositions of material, Eng examines the many parts — sometimes minute — that contribute to social and biological life.
