UNIVERSITY PARK — A longtime volunteer with decades of broadcast experience will be the new host of Morning Edition on WPSU-FM.
Sally J. Sherman, a Penn State journalism graduate, has been hired to take over morning duties at the station from Mel DeYoung, who retired earlier this month after hosting Morning Edition for 13 years. Morning Edition airs from 5 to 9 a.m. each weekday on WPSU-FM.
“We think WPSU listeners will really enjoy hearing Sally’s friendly voice as they begin their days,” said Emily Reddy, news director for WPSU.
Many listeners will already be familiar with Sherman, who has been a volunteer host on WPSU for the last 20 years, Reddy said.
“We hired Sally for her extensive radio experience, her warm yet authoritative delivery and her clear love of public radio.”
Sherman previously worked as a broadcaster, information specialist and customer support specialist for AccuWeather, as an audience and member services assistant at NPR in Washington, D.C., at a radio station in Kansas, and at stations in Bethlehem, Jersey Shore and State College.
"It's a real honor to be asked to succeed Mel, who started our mornings so warmly for over a decade, and a dream come true to come full circle in my love for radio,” Sherman said.
WPSU-FM is accessible to more than 450,000 listeners in 13 counties, and WPSU-TV, a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member station, serves 24 counties in central Pennsylvania and reaches 515,000 households. The public media station also includes WPSU Digital Studios, which offers original web series that explore science, arts, and culture.
WPSU is a service of Penn State Outreach.
