12-voice ensemble Chanticleer to visit Penn State on Sept. 26

'Sing Joyfully' program will accentuate high notes of song; Sept. 25 Classical Coffeehouse event will highlight medieval works

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 12-voice-strong ensemble Chanticleer will project a collective vocal smile with a performance of “Sing Joyfully” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus.

“Sing Joyfully” features uplifting arrangements of spirituals, folk songs and commissions, including works by William Byrd, Joni Mitchell, Irving Berlin and Shawn Crouch.

Founded in San Francisco in 1978 by musicologist Louis Botto, the Grammy Award-winning vocal group is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its adventurous range and quick harmony. Today, Chanticleer is one of the most prolific recording and touring ensembles in the world. It has sold more than 1 million albums and has performed thousands of live concerts to audiences around the world.

Classical Coffeehouse

Chanticleer will perform works from its Renaissance program “Without a Song” during an intimate Classical Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Pasquerilla Spiritual Center’s Worship Hall.

Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and refreshments will be served. The event is free for University Park and high school students. A $15 donation is suggested for each person who isn’t a student.
