UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three Penn State graphic design students along with their professors earned honors in the 2021 AIGA Blue Ridge Flux National Student Design Competition.
The annual design competition honors creative work from graduate and undergraduate students nationwide in seven categories: identity, packaging, poster, publication, social impact design, UX/UI, and video/motion graphics. Best in category and honorable mention awards are given in each category, while other selected designs receive honors.
More than 715 entries were received for the 2021 competition, with the creative jury recognizing 116 designs with awards and honors.
All three Stuckeman School students were recognized with honors in the identity category.
Graduate student Shatakshi Mehra was recognized for a submission titled “Juniata River Trail” that she worked on with Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Emily Burns. The project features a sign for the trail, wayfinding and information cards about the kind of plant and animal species that can be found along the trailway. The design makes the trail more visible, identifiable, and navigable for visitors.
Second-year student Gabrielle Harris earned honors for her submission titled “Boos Fest" with Assistant Teaching Professor of Graphic Design Taylor Shipton. The project featured a flyer promoting the event, a pamphlet and tickets for the event. The designs are cohesive branding materials for an event.
Carson Schultz, also a second-year student, earned an honor for his “Test Flight Film Festival” project with Burns. His submission included a booklet with details about the venue, event tickets, a promotional poster and a mockup of Test Flight’s Instagram page. The design focuses on branding for the film festival that celebrates independent films.
The award-winning designs can be found on the Flux website.
