UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Arts and Architecture’s Stuckeman School at Penn State will wrap up its spring Lecture and Exhibit Series at 6 p.m. April 3 in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space with a visit from Bryony Gomez-Palacio, principal and co-founder of graphic design firm UnderConsideration. The lecture also will be offered via Zoom.
Gomez-Palacio has run UnderConsideration, an Indiana-based graphic design firm that generates projects and content while taking on limited client work, since 2001. UnderConsideration organizes design events, sells products such as design prints, and publishes posts on their current blog titled, “Brand New.” The blog’s bi-weekly podcast, “The Follow-Up” discusses the projects reviewed on “Brand New” and features conversations with the designers, and sometimes clients, to uncover the context, background and design decisions behind the work.
In 2010, Gomez-Palacio and her husband Armin Vit created the Brand New Conference, a two-day event on corporate and brand identity with some of the most active and influential practitioners from around the world. The event furthers the exchange of knowledge within the design community, taking place in person and online. The 2024 event will take place Oct. 10-11 in Salt Lake City.
Titled, “The Case Against Easy,” Gomez-Palacio’s talk will dive into the why, when and how of starting the Brand New Conference. She will discuss the year-to-year evolution process of the duo’s passion project that challenged them to design for designers and create the event they wanted to find within the industry. She will identify key milestones, non-negotiables, production experiments, growing pains within the event planning and the aspects of the project that they love and feel eager to tackle each year.
Gomez-Palacio and Vit have published five books together, including “Graphic Design Referenced” and “Flaunt: Designing Effective, Compelling and Memorable Portfolios of Creative Work.”
Most recently, the duo created First Round, a one-day showcase of original presentations made to clients showing initial design explorations for logo, identity and branding projects that takes place every few months in a different city. The 2024 event took place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
When she isn’t working on materials for the Brand New Conference, organizing events or working on client work, Gomez-Palacio serves as a chair to the Bloomington Arts Commission and a board member of the entrepreneurial launchpad Dimension Mill.
All events in the Lecture and Exhibit Series are free and open to the public.
