UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Symphonic Band, under the direction of Professor Robert Hickey, has been selected to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's (PMEA) 2025 State Conference on Friday, April 11. The prestigious event will take place at the Kalahari Conference Center in Pocono Manor.

The Penn State band program is one of the most highly admired and visible university band programs in the United States. Founded in 1899, the program is known for its excellence in both concert and athletic band organizations. Committed to providing outstanding musical opportunities for its members, the Penn State concert band program comprises four ensembles: the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Campus Band.

The Symphonic Band, an auditioned ensemble open to all students at the University Park campus regardless of major, presents several concerts each semester in the 2,600-seat Eisenhower Auditorium. Their repertoire includes traditional band works and contemporary compositions, with a focus on programming music by living composers. The ensemble regularly collaborates with composers and has recently worked with Kevin Poelking, Katahj Copley and Viet Cuong.

The program for the PMEA performance will feature a diverse and engaging selection of works, including:

  • Fanfare for a New Day (2018) – Kevin Poelking (b. 1988)

  • Sound and Smoke (2011) – Viet Cuong (b. 1990)

  • Adoration (1920s, arr. 2022) – Florence Price (1888-1953), trans. Cheldon Williams

  • American Salute (1971) – Morton Gould (1913-1996)

  • Flying Jewels (2021) – James David (b. 1978)

The PMEA State Conference is an annual gathering of music educators, students and professionals dedicated to the advancement of music education in Pennsylvania. Featuring performances, clinics and presentations by leading educators and ensembles, the conference provides an invaluable opportunity for collaboration and artistic exchange.
