ALTOONA, Pa. — Penn State Altoona is offering Scottish Highland, tap and ballet dance classes for adults beginning in January 2024. There is a $50 registration fee for each of the three classes.
Scottish Highland dance classes will be held on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. from Jan. 10 through Feb. 14 in the Dance Studio, Room 148 of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. This athletic dance form develops strength, stamina and flexibility. Students will be introduced to the Sword Dance and Highland Fling as well as social dances. An energetic class fueled by bagpipe music will bring out the Celtic spirit of dance in everyone. Dancers should wear shorts or leggings with a T-shirt or tank top, socks or bare feet, and long hair pulled back (no jeans or jean shorts). Classes in rhythm tap will be held on Fridays from 7 to 8 p.m. from Jan. 12 through Feb. 16 in the Wolf Kuhn Theatre of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. No experience is needed and all levels are welcome. Participants will learn and explore the basics of rhythm tap using rudiments, steps, rhythms, progressions and combinations. Ballet classes will beheld on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. from Jan. 16 through Feb. 20 in the Dance Studio, Room 148 of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Designed for all levels and abilities, this class provides instruction on barre exercises, alignment, flexibility, strength and coordination as well as the fundamentals of turns, leaps and dynamic traveling movements. Dancers are encouraged to wear athletic or dance attire and ballet shoes. Registration for ballet classes is available online.
