UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Unexpected expenses can bring stress, frustration and financial instability to a household, making it more difficult to cope with a crisis or difficulty. At Penn State, a program through Human Resources aims to help reduce that stress by offering financial support for employees in crisis. The Employee Assistance Fund (EAF) can assist full-time University employees who find themselves in temporary, unfortunate, or extenuating financial circumstances.

Through the EAF, full-time employees at any Penn State location can apply for support for temporary hardships beyond the employee’s control. Factors that may be used to determine eligibility include the nature of the hardship, the number and nature of previous requests, and income level.

“We care deeply for the health and well-being of our colleagues and our hearts go out to them when they encounter these unexpected difficulties. The Employee Assistance Fund provides vital support to our employees who are facing a crisis or unexpected financial struggles,” said Jennifer Wilkes, vice president for Human Resources and chief human resources officer. “Through this program, we’re able to help fellow Penn Staters during those difficult moments.”

The endowed fund, created in 2002 through an estate gift, continues to receive annual support from Penn State alumni and friends. Anyone interested in making a gift to the fund can visit the Office of University Development web page. More than a thousand full-time employees have received funding through the EAF over the years.

“While the funds may only cover a portion of the expenses, that small amount can carry an employee to a more stable and supported place,” Wilkes said. “Each request is considered individually, and employees are not required to pay back the funding provided to them through this program. The EAF aims to show Penn State employees that they can get the support they need, even when they feel they have nowhere to turn.”

Before applying to the EAF, employees are encouraged to seek financial advice through other programs, including the SupportLinc employee assistance program offered by the University and avenues outside of Penn State. The fund serves as a last resort for employees who have not found relief through other programs. But for those who have sought financial support through other avenues and are still struggling, the EAF can help to cover some costs.

Applications to the EAF are accepted on a rolling basis. Those in need of support can fill out an application and email the finished form, including any supporting documentation to assistancefund@psu.edu for consideration. Requests are evaluated and reviewed as they are received. Information submitted as part of an application will remain confidential.
