UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to combating bias and intolerance and building a more diverse and equitable institution, Penn State will launch Track 3 of the BUILD @ Penn State program on Nov. 4.
BUILD @ Penn State, or “Broadening Understanding and Inclusion through Learning and Dialogue,” is a University-wide diversity education initiative.
The program includes three tracks available through the Penn State Learning Resource Network (LRN), and is intended to be completed in successive years, building on the foundations of previous tracks as an employee progresses through the program.
The first track, launched in 2022, focused on recognizing the importance of inclusion in the workplace. Last year, a second track provided insight on adopting an inclusion mindset at work. Track 3, the latest in the series, aims to help participants develop skills for building a culture of inclusion. A separate leadership track is available for managers and supervisors.
“BUILD has been positively received by both faculty and staff since launching for all employees in November 2022, and continues to be a recommended resource within units across the University as they look to advance their DEIB efforts,” said Christy Helms, senior director of talent management in Penn State Human Resources.
All employees will receive an email inviting them to participate in either Track 1, Track 2 or Track 3 in early November. Tracks will be assigned based on hire date and completion of past tracks. Employees are encouraged to complete their assigned BUILD track by Feb. 14, 2025.
Each track contains three courses, takes approximately 90 minutes to complete, and offers the flexibility to start and stop as needed so each individual can complete the courses in a timeframe that fits their schedule. Employees who participate will receive social media badges and digital certificates upon program completion.
“The BUILD @ Penn State program is an essential part of our efforts to promote a culture of inclusion and belonging across the University,” said Suzanne Adair, associate vice president for equal opportunity and access. “We will continue to build on the foundational content of these educational sessions with additional opportunities for reflection and dialogue in the coming year. As a community, it is our responsibility to welcome members from all backgrounds and identities and this program is one way to assist with that goal.”
To date, more than 20,000 employees have completed Track 1, more than 12,700 employees have completed Track 2, and over 3,300 supervisors and managers have completed the leadership track. Of those who have completed Tracks 1 and 2, 83% of participants rated the program highly.
Employees interested in accessing instructor-led sessions that delve deeper into specific DEIB topics should visit the Learning Resource Network (LRN) and search “BUILD/IDP.” Registration is available directly in the LRN.
