UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As Election Day approaches on Tuesday, Nov. 5, Penn State faculty are reminded of the Faculty Senate’s 2023 revision to Student Policy 42-27, which encourages instructors to offer remote, asynchronous classes on Election Day. This policy supports student and faculty participation in elections as voters or poll workers without the need to attend in-person classes.

As part of the guidance offered by the Senate, instructors should avoid scheduling exams or high-stakes assignments, instead offering flexible, asynchronous assignments that can be accessed remotely on Canvas. Exceptions to the policy may apply to accelerated courses or courses meeting only once per week, such as labs or clinicals.

Instructors are encouraged to communicate expectations for asynchronous Election Day instruction in advance. Posting a “Vote!” reminder in Canvas, and making class announcements ahead of time, can reinforce the importance of civic participation. Faculty should keep in mind that students may have varying internet access, so providing a 24- to 48-hour window for completing assignments is recommended. Group activities also should be designed to be completed asynchronously or postponed if possible.

Faculty also are advised to take advantage of Canvas tools to streamline grading, such as the “complete/incomplete” grading option for participation. By creatively adapting course content and providing accessible materials, instructors can facilitate meaningful engagement on Election Day while supporting the University’s commitment to civic participation.
