Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, in partnership with the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA), has announced a study abroad program for nursing students. Scheduled for March 1 to 9, 2024, this program aims to provide academic, logistical and cultural support in Mérida, Mexico.

Course Information

COMM 101N: Understanding and Enhancing Creativity explores creativity through scientific inquiry, beginning with an overview of its various approaches and theories. The course applies these concepts to analyze creativity's role in art, writing, mass media, strategic communications, science and organizations. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of creativity across disciplines. The course also introduces techniques for enhancing creativity, culminating in students producing their own creative work. Overall, the course aims to improve critical thinking, analytical skills and multidisciplinary integration.

Offered as a web class for 3 credits, the course runs from Jan. 22 to March 15, 2024.

Academic Focus

The academic agenda includes faculty-led sessions at IFSA's Mérida facility for both instruction and group discussions. In addition, students will benefit from one specialized lecture delivered by local experts in the field. The program also incorporates two site visits aimed at community engagement and an overnight academic excursion to the Mayan community of Yaxunah.

Cultural Activities and Excursions

The cultural segment of the program offers a broad view of local traditions and landmarks. Activities include a bus tour of Mérida, a walking tour through the city's historic downtown area, and a hands-on Yucatecan cooking class. A day trip to the renowned archaeological site of Chichén Itzá is also planned.

Logistical Support

Accommodations involve staying with IFSA-approved host families that are within walking distance of the program's academic locations. These families provide three meals per day, and a boxed lunch will be available for students during day excursions. Included in the program are airport transfers and local transportation to planned activities.

Health and Safety

On-location IFSA staff will offer constant oversight, and 24-7 emergency support is included in the package.
