UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — ASAP/Journal, an academic journal led by Jonathan P. Eburne, Penn State associate professor of comparative literature, English, and French and Francophone Studies, has been named Best New Journal by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ).
Eburne, currently editor-in-chief of the journal and one of its founding editors, helped accept the award on the journal’s behalf on Jan. 5 in New York City during an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the 2018 Modern Language Association Annual Convention. The award follows ASAP/Journal receiving CELJ’s Best Design Award in 2017.
CELJ is an allied organization of the Modern Language Association and the preeminent organization dedicated to supporting academic journal publishing, boasting a membership of more than 450 editors representing all disciplines. The organization’s Best New Journal award — one of eight it presents annually to recognize scholarly achievement — honors a scholarly humanities journal with a publication history of three or fewer years.
ASAP/Journal is the peer-reviewed scholarly publication of the Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present. Published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, the journal explores new developments in post-1960s visual, media, literary and performance arts. Recognizing the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary art and criticism across the globe, ASAP/Journal promotes intellectual exchange between artists and critics across the arts and humanities.
ASAP/Journal was founded in 2016 by Eburne and Amy J. Elias, professor of English and director of the UT Humanities Center at the University of Tennessee, who received her master’s degree and doctorate in English from Penn State. The online version of the journal, ASAP/J, is edited by Abram Foley, lecturer in literature and the creative industries at the University of Exeter (United Kingdom), who also received his master’s degree and doctorate in English from Penn State.
