10 Penn State students and alumni receive Fulbright awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State students and alumni will travel to all corners of the globe for the 2019-2020 school year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Below is a list of English Teaching Assistantship finalists, their department of study, college and host country:

  • Scout Cheeks, alumna; Criminology and Global and International Studies, College of the Liberal Arts; Brazil
  • Karly Feinberg, alumna, Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Smeal College of Business, Colombia
  • Geoffrey Merz, undergraduate; Community, Environment and Development, College of Agricultural Sciences; Senegal
  • Alanna Powers, undergraduate; Advertising and Public Relations, Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, and English, College of the Liberal Arts; Czech Republic
  • Jayme Rhoads, alumna; Italian and French and Francophone Studies, and Global and International Studies, and Comparative Literature, College of the Liberal Arts; Italy
  • Rachel Shriver, undergraduate; Secondary Education, College of Education; Colombia
  • Tessa Sontheimer, undergraduate; Community, Environment, and Development, College of Agricultural Sciences, and Global and International Studies, College of the Liberal Arts; Indonesia

The following is a list of study/research finalists and their host country:

  • Kyle Cornman, undergraduate; Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, and History and International Politics, College of the Liberal Arts; Germany
  • Andrew Hoffman, graduate; German, College of the Liberal Arts; Austria
  • Jacob Johnson, graduate; Forest Resources, College of Agricultural Sciences; Zambia

Additionally, a Penn State student and alumna were named as alternates:

  • Eve Jones, undergraduate; Community, Environment and Development, College of Agricultural Sciences
  • Katie Power, alumna; Supply Chain and Information Management, Smeal College of Business, and Spanish, College of the Liberal Arts

The finalists are among the 2,100 U.S. citizens who earned funding to study, conduct research and teach abroad during the 2019-2020 school year. Recipients are selected based on their academic and professional achievement, as well as their record of service and leadership potential.

The Fulbright Program has provided more than 380,000 participants the opportunity to study abroad since its inception in 1946. The primary source of funding is appropriated by Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The participating governments and host institutions along with corporations and foundations also provide support.

At Penn State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered by the University Fellowships Office under the direction of Caitlin Ting. The campus deadline for the upcoming 2020-2021 cycle is set for Aug. 30. Students interested in learning more or applying are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Ting.
