ABINGTON, Pa. — Registration for summer courses at Penn State Abington is open for students enrolled any Penn State campus and for those from other universities and colleges who wish to take courses during the Maymester and two later sessions.

“Summer is a great time to take a course that you really want to focus on, especially with our small class sizes," said Eva Klein, director of academic services at Abington. "You can get ahead, stay on track or take a course you need as a prerequisite for your fall schedule. It’s also a path toward graduating sooner."

Summer courses at Abington run the gamut from the liberal arts to business and the sciences. Three courses may fulfill a requirement while exploring music and sports and their culture impacts:

  • The History of Hip-Hop ("AFAM126N/INART126N: The Popular Arts in America"): Instructor Justin De Senso, a hip-hop scholar and freestyle MC, will examine the cultural, economic, social and political implications of hip-hop worldwide since its beginnings in the 1970s.

  • The Music of the Beatles and American Popular Culture ("MUS 209N") will contextualize the band's work to show how both popular music and culture can influence one another. The course will be taught by John Pachence, associate teaching professor of Integrative Arts and a Grammy-nominated composer, performer and teacher.

  • Baseball in Comparative History ("HIST113") will examine the sport’s diverse and changing social, economic and political meanings, emphasizing the ways in which a common activity may acquire unique meanings in different cultures.

Almost 90% of the summer 2024 course offerings at Abington are taught either synchronously or asynchronously. Go to Summer Courses to find the summer course guide, calendar, step-by-step enrollment instructions, tuition, and other details.
